NATIONAL HMONG GRAVE DESECRATION - HELP SIGN THE PETITION!

Back in 2005, Hmong graves in Wat Tham Krabok, Thailand, were exhumed. The National Hmong Grave Desecration Committee was created to help find a peaceful and just solution to the issue. In the past few years, the Committee has worked with the US government, French government, Thai government, the United Nations, local Hmong organizations, and human rights groups. In April 2010, the NHGDC chair will meet with the United Nations. We need all the help we can get. The NHGDC wants a total of 70,000 signatures for the petition. HAW wants you help help us reach this goal. Please go to the National Hmong Grave Desecration Committee website to learn more or go to sign the petition online at www.gopetition.com.

2010 CENSUS

How many Hmong people live in Washington? That is something no one knows for sure. The last census was in 2000, which says there are 1,294 Hmong in Washington, and 902 in the Seattle-Tacoma region. I believe that number has increased quite a bit. HAW has been approached by the census workers and have been asked to help out the Hmong community in getting everyone counted in 2010. HAW will make sure that most - if not all - the Hmong will be counted in 2010.

WING LUKE ASIAN MUSEUM - HMONG EXHIBIT, MARCH 5, 2010 - OCTOBER 2010

The Hmong community is working with the Wing Luke Asian Museum to prepare an exhibit on the Hmong people living in washington. The exhibit will focus on the Hmong's history, their culture, their immigration and resettlement, and their lives in Washington. If you've never heard of or want to know more of the Hmong, this is a great opportunity to peer into the lives of the Hmong. Many of the Asian farmers at the local farmer's markets are Hmong. On display will be photos, voice recordings, music, sounds, and artifacts.

See the WLAM Flyer.

SEATTLE HMONG NEW YEAR (NOV. 6, 2010)

We are already in the planning stages for this upcoming Hmong New Year. Right now, we are deciding on what cultural artist to bring to our event this year. We try to do something new each year, by giving it a theme. This is not an easy task. If you would like to help out, you are invited to come to our meetings and learn more.

HMONG GRADUATION PARTY 2010

This year will be different in that the graduates will be organizing the party. The event will be at the Highland Community Center on June 19th, 2010. If anyone graduating in 2010 would like to help, please contact us. Also, if you are graduating, please contact us also so we have you on our list. It is important for HAW to keep track of our graduates and know how well our community is doing educationally. There will be a scholarship contest again this year. Applications will be available 2 months before the event. Thanks for your support.
