HMONG NEW YEAR - UPDATE

This year, HAW and EHA (Eastside Hmong Association) will be working together to host a single Hmong New Year event, which will be at Issaquah Community Center, on November 1st, 2008. This event will be for both the Seattle and Eastside Hmong community. We have looked at many venues and this is the only one that fits our criteria.

This is a very large effort by both organizations and will require financial help from the community to make it work. Both organizations have worked hard to plan this event, and we want to have the whole communitys support so that this will be a yearly event from here on. We hope to raise the majority of the funds needed to cover the costs of the venue rental and security, but we also want the community to contribute also to make the event more enjoyable for the community.

In the past, HAW tried to fulfill two objectives with one Hmong New Year Festival event at the Seattle Center: (1) to hold a New Year for the Hmong community, and (2) to present a cultural experience for the general audience. HAW could not fully meet both objectives with a single event at the Seattle Center. This year, we will separate these two objectives into two events.

The first event, the HMONG NEW YEAR, will be held at Issaquah Community Center, on November 1st, 2008. This event will be for the Hmong community, in a more private setting. HAW and EHA will provide for a more traditional approach to the Hmong New Year. The event will focus on providing a more traditional feel to the Hmong New Year. Please come celebrate with us. The more, the better.

The second event, the celebration at the Seattle Center, will be held on November 8th, 2008. This used to be where the Hmong celebrated the Hmong New Year. The event at Seattle Center is called the HMONG NEW YEAR FESTIVAL. This event is held in a public and open space. The day programming will focus on providing a rich Hmong cultural experience for the general public. Please come celebrate with us. The more, the better.

We are in the early stages of planning, so come back regularly to see updates. We will have more details mid-August.

"HMONG GRAVE DESECRATION" - UPDATE

The Hmong Grave Desecration National Committee have been working hard in developing a working “Policy and Procedures” document to organize support for this issue. The HGDNC also plans to build local chapters within the Hmong communities to help raise awareness of the issue and to raise money to fund the work.

HMONG YOUTH MOBILIZATION MEETING

We had hoped for a stronger youth turnout. Still, we were able to accomplish our goals of reaching out to the younger crowd and showing them what could be accomplished if we, as a community, are more organized. This will be a recurring theme as HAW continues to reach out to the community to encourage youths to become more active in the community.

HMONG NATIONAL CONFERENCE (HNC)

The Hmong National Conference may be new to some people here in the Northwest, but it has been around for 15 years. It is hosted by Hmong National Development (HND), whose mission is to build leadership and capacity within the Hmong communities for the future. This year, HAW was able to send 10 people (4 contestant winners and 6 board members) to the event. If you want to learn more about HNC, come join us for the Hmong Graduation, where the 4 contestants will be speaking of what they learn and experienced. For more information on HND, go to www.hndinc.org.

HAW BOARD ELECTION 2009

In January 2009, HAW will be electing new positions to the Board of Directors. Our Hmong community is small, but we have good talent. HAW hope to see new faces this upcoming year to help fill in roles in our community to make our community stronger. Our goal is to have leadership and service in culture, education, business, farming, law, social justice, social service, careers, human rights, etc. Please become a volunteer today and make your Hmong community better.

Email Yee Xiong with any questions or comments or call him directly at (425) 241-2085.
